The Yeovil Urban Development Framework was commissioned to find physical solutions to deliver the aspirations of the Yeovil Vision, a strategic agenda for the future vitality and prosperity of the town. Regular series of press releases, launches, member briefings and community events ensured that from start to finish the scope and purpose of the framework was clear to the local community, politicians and the local property market.
A key aspect of the project included our analysis of the town in its context. A 3D model of the town was prepared to further the understanding of topography and townscape. The historical development of the town was greatly influenced by its topography but much of this legibility was lost due to new road building in the 1970s. The resulting development framework sought to repair much of this damage, reinstate the legibility and other human qualities of the town while creating new development opportunities. This resulted in the development of a spatial plan that not only considered the commercial heart of the town and also the physical and functional linkages with the surrounding areas and communities.
The UDF included an implementation schedule of projects that combine to deliver the spatial plan and its objectives, with development and design briefing for the key sites. We continue to work with the Council to provide advice on the delivery of these projects.
