The centre of Woodstock is a designated conservation area, with its historic streets and buildings making it a popular destination. West Oxfordshire District Council commissioned studio | REAL to prepare an urban design framework for the town. This required assessments of the historic development of the town, movement, the existing condition of streets and spaces together with a visual and spatial analysis of the town centre as a basis for the production of public realm briefs. We were subsequently commissioned to produce detailed designs, specifications and tender documentation for the construction of the initial public realm improvements; the new town hall square.
In its previous condition, the square was dominated by car parking. Improvements included the relocation of parking and repaving of the square and roadways in York stone flagstones and setts, selected and sourced to match adjacent building facades, and new street furniture. The new square provides a venue for markets, fairs and events.
