Waterford is the principal centre for the South-East Ireland sub-region, with a catchment area that extends to most of Waterford County and the south of Kilkenny County. The respective authorities came together to jointly commission a Strategic Framework Plan for Waterford and Environs. With a proposed new river crossing and associated infrastructure the town was poised to consolidate its position as one of Ireland’s key urban centres.
In producing the plan studio | REAL reviewed available data and forecasted demographic change over a twenty year period. Existing land use and transportation data was then analysed using a comprehensive GIS model in order to provide the basis for development and growth options. These options could then be tested for their impact on transportation patterns, infrastructure requirements and economic development. The final plan was then developed as the basis for detailed proposals within a number of defined action areas.
The Strategic Framework Plan seeks to integrate land use and transportation through the development of sustainable neighbourhoods. The plan aims to create a compact city in order to protect its distinctive setting within the landscape while enabling the continued development of Waterford’s economy and role as a sub regional centre.
