London Borough of Southwark successfully bid for funding to improve Walworth Road through the Department for Transport as a ‘Mixed Priority Road Safety Demonstration Project’, subsequently commissioning studio | REAL to undertake preliminary urban design analysis studies and set objectives for public consultation.
Walworth Road is a key distributor road providing important transport connections and local shopping facilities in central Southwark. The 1.2km road links areas of major change and regeneration at Elephant & Castle to the north and Peckham to the south. A key identified objective of the project was the need to adopt an innovative, urban design-led approach to improving safety, which recognises that many physical and human elements influence driver behaviour, beyond those within the immediate carriageway.
