Thetford is an active market town of about 22,000 people in west Norfolk and was granted Growth Point status in 2006. The vision for growth includes 5,000 new jobs and 6,500 dwellings and associated facilities, backed up by a number of preliminary supporting studies. We were commissioned to review the studies and key issues and pull together a strategic framework to inform the Preferred Options stage of the Thetford Area Action Plan.
The project included stakeholder workshops and analysis of the route structure and neighbourhood structure to supplement the previous studies. The principal output of the work was a key diagram illustrating the future vision of the town. The proposals in the diagram seek to reinforce and extend the relationship of the town with the rivers Thet and Little Ouse along with the many associated cultural assets such as Thetford Priory, Castle Hill and adjacent estates of Kilverstone and Snarehill. Integration of the growth into the town is achieved by a range of means including a greater Thetford circular walk, coordination and extension of footpaths and a clear structure of new streets connecting centres and existing routes.
