The extension of Worcester city centre and the redevelopment of the cattle market and Worcester Royal Infirmary were undertaken as part of a Government funded programme to promote best practice in urban design. studio | REAL were commissioned by Worcester City Council, Worcester Quality Partnership and the Department of the Environment to produce the urban design framework for a 22 ha site between the City of Worcester and the River Severn.
Of particular importance was the need to find innovative and effective methods for communicating ideas and inspiring action. Proposals were therefore displayed nationally with a 3D computer animation and fly-by as the centre-piece of the exhibition.
Drawing on aspirations expressed at a series of events to explore a cross-section of interests, we generated a coherent and viable vision for the area intended to stem the decline and promote opportunities for a high quality extension of the city centre. The framework was adopted as SPD in 2008 and studio | REAL was subsequently commissioned to produce a delivery plan for the area.
