Southey Owlerton Area Regeneration (SOAR) covers 10% of the city of Sheffield, north of the centre. SOAR has worked jointly with the City Council, local people, CABE and other stakeholders and partners to develop a regeneration framework which draws together both local neighbourhood issues and themes across the whole area. One of these themes is Streetscene, a project undertaken by studio | REAL to address the poor quality of the street environment.
Streetscene has concentrated on two aspects: public realm improvements at local centres, with specific proposals to reinvent them as vibrant and active focal points for SOAR’s five neighbourhoods; and generic proposals to improve all levels of the street hierarchy, paying attention to traffic calming, car parking and street surfaces and planting.
The work was based on an analysis of the underlying landscape of the area, drawing from it palettes for materials and details that reflect the hilltop and valley characteristics of its steep topography. This included developing ways of handling typical residential roads and main roads in the area, in consultation with the city’s highways department, and detailed schemes for improving neighbourhood centres. Two of these proposals were implemented immediately, for which studio | REAL drew up detailed designs for construction.
