studio | REAL was commissioned by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council in partnership with Transform South Yorkshire, Yorkshire Forward and CABE to prepare Design Codes for Rotherham Town Centre and River Corridor. One of seven CABE design code pilot projects, Rotherham was the only pilot focussing specifically on issues of town centre regeneration and the only pilot project to be adopted as Supplementary Planning Guidance.
The Design Code is a tool to implement the masterplan and help coordinate a number of different development initiatives. The code provides both a guiding vision and specific directions for the regeneration of the Westgate Area. It is primarily concerned with the definition of the public realm, architectural massing and construction materials.
