Llandeilo is an attractive market town set in the rural west of Wales which is seeking tourism and footloose industries for its livelihood. studio | REAL was commissioned by Carmarthenshire County Council to address existing concerns and to devise a strategy to help secure future prosperity.
The first challenge for studio | REAL was to establish a working relationship with the local community. We set up a drop-in office in the town centre for the first month of the study. This provided an opportunity for face to face discussions with a broad section of the local community and a base for undertaking a full appraisal of the town’s strengths and weaknesses. Subsequently, a strategy based on economic, community, environmental and transport objectives was formulated with innovation, sustainability and partnership being key themes. 32 projects were identified to assist in the realisation of these objectives, together with and accompanying implementation strategy. These projects include traffic management schemes in the high street, the creation of a new town square, re-use of an abandoned rail line as a cycle route, the promotion of a business incubator and the creation of a sensory garden. Wide support was demonstrated for these projects at an exhibition which was visited by nearly a third of the local community.
