The Foleshill Road represents perhaps the most interesting of Coventry’s arterial routes, passing through a number of character areas that have been weakened over successive decades through inappropriate redevelopment and insensitive highway interventions. studio | REAL were commissioned by Coventry City Council to undertake an urban design framework and physical development strategy for the long term regeneration of this key movement corridor and its surrounding districts which, stretching 4 miles between the M6 and Coventry City Centre, suffer from issues of multiple deprivation.
studio | REAL identified a number of opportunities along the route, which formed the cornerstones of the framework strategy. These included the Coventry Canal, remnants of the area’s past in the shape of old factory buildings, other interesting structures and several significant development sites. Through considerable analysis (visual, land-use, historical and townscape) studio | REAL was able to determine the extent of each character area, its strengths, weakness and opportunities and propose a range of development schemes, public realm and building improvements and art projects. Alongside proposals for reinforcing and enhancing the character areas, studio | REAL identified improvement schemes for the connecting spaces in order to create a metaphorical string of beads. The strategy also included an implementation plan which established priorities and potential funding opportunities.
