studio | REAL was commissioned by Cheltenham Borough Council to produce public realm framework and regeneration proposals for the Charlton Kings area on the outskirts of the town which was designated a Placecheck Initiative pilot project. Extensive public involvement was achieved through the Charlton Kings Local Regeneration Partnership, comprising representatives from groups including the Borough, County and Parish Councils, CK2000 residents group, local schools, shopkeepers and a diverse range of other local interests.
We devised a range of long term proposals including public realm improvements, new areas of habitat creation, public arts strategies for use as local educational resources, and areas of new infill residential and retail development overlooking the improved open spaces. Proposals were accompanied by a comprehensive implementation programme identifying funding and delivery mechanisms. The first stage of public realm improvements to the village centre precinct area has delivered a high quality and ambitious ‘early win’ for this project.
