Bishop’s Stortford is located just west of Stansted airport within the London Stansted Cambridge Peterborough growth area. As part of the effort to provide the evidence base for growth we were asked by East Herts and the Government Office for the East of England to prepare a framework for a sustainable extension to the north of the town.
The study adopted a ‘whole town’ approach, looking at the overall structure of the town and its relationship to the surrounding landscape. This approach helped to address the key challenge of the project which was to provide a robust basis for integrating the extension into both the landscape and the town and assessing the capacity and impact of potential development on the town itself.
A review of existing policies and site assessments confirmed the area identified for growth should include 132 hectares of land to accommodate a mixed-use neighbourhood centre, a smaller local centre, 32,000 square meters of office space, 15,000 square metres of industrial space, schools, public open space and 2,800 dwellings.
The detailed substance of the study was set out in a framework of strategies for the location of development, landscape and open space, movement and neighbourhood structure.
