As part of a concerted effort to stimulate neighbourhood renewal, studio | REAL were invited to develop a physical vision for this city neighbourhood which comprises the two adjoining council housing estates of Bestwood and Bestwood Park located 3.5 miles north of Nottingham city Centre. The area accommodates up to 11,800 people living in some 4,700 dwellings and suffers from many of the problems associated with multiple deprivation, with the area’s ward being amongst the 10% most deprived wards nationally.
The framework strategy was of fundamental importance in unlocking funding and investment opportunities. Based on an iterative process of public participation the urban design framework has a specific focus on the local public realm and open space network, movement and access arrangements and development opportunities. A particular issue was the extent of under-used and poorly overlooked open space, some of which was available because of the relocation of an existing college site. The framework proposes a number of viable and deliverable design solutions for the development of key sites and open space, alongside a series of policy recommendations and projects that are assisting in securing the environmental, social and economic well-being of the local community.
