According to the Mayor of London’s policies, healthy town centres are an essential part of sustainable suburbs. Centres should aim to provide access to a range of shops and services, and contribute to local identity.
In Barkingside, people felt that the town centre had become less attractive physically and economically, which led the Council to commission a Town Centre Improvement Plan.
The work we undertook on the plan was widely supported by the community. Key to its success was our flexible approach to involving all sections of the community in developing creative ideas to address local issues. The Plan outlines a large range of interventions, from physical changes to the form and fabric of the town, to innovative approaches to car parking and maximising business opportunities.
The council considered the Plan a “professional, pragmatic and innovative piece of work which will put us in a good position for the next stages in implementing the proposals.”
