Tourism for Thüringen

North Thüringen is an area largely untouched by planning interventions from the second half of the 20th century. The historic character of the northern towns is largely intact although heavy industry has scarred some landscapes and the pressures of out of town shopping and increased vehicular usage have only been partially addressed.

This EU funded project examined the character of the principal towns and established objectives for conservation and enhancement. This was within the context of an economic development strategy of which a key component was the promotion of tourism.

The study informed a business plan for the subregion and was successful in securing funding for the protection and improvement of the built environment of the main historic towns.
