A bright future for market towns

Most market towns have a distinctive historic centre that confers a unique identity and character. When you plan to regenerate and expand a market town, the challenge is to create opportunities for growth that enhance these distinctive characteristics.

The Moat Lane project aimed to regenerate and strengthen the town’s centre, anticipating planned expansion from a population of 9,000 to over 16,000. We prepared a Planning Brief (adopted as an SPD) and a subsequent masterplan which detailed the form and character of a new town quarter.

Within the regeneration area is historic parkland, a Norman castle mound and distinctive ironstone buildings. Our plan ensures that growth will be sensitive to this historic context whilst also maximising use of the town centre’s existing assets.

The detailed masterplanning work together with digital and physical 3D modelling assisted negotiations with affected businesses and landowners, and was instrumental in assembling the site for development.
