HAVANT TOWN CENTRE, HAMPSHIRE

Promoting development opportunities

Havant faces issues that are typical to many UK centres; a decline in the face of out-of-town retail parks, competition from larger and more attractive centres and a down-market perception.

The town in fact has many positive attributes and using context analysis we considered its historic form and growth, its character areas, the landscape within the town centre, and movement patterns. We identified ways to improve frontages and created a simple 3D computer model which highlighted new development opportunities. These were then examined more closely to identify how development might proceed.

Our work has been used to promote Havant town centre opportunities to national developers, including a successful ‘developer day’ where we presented our ideas. The framework has provided key evidence for the local development framework and remains a guidance tool for new development.
