BASING VIEW, BASINGSTOKE, HAMPSHIRE

An integrated business district

The central business district in Basingstoke is a typical example of the legacy of unsuccessful land-use zoning in the 1960s and 70s, built around fast motor access. We were commissioned by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to prepare an urban design framework for regeneration.

Basing View is an impressive but dated high-rise office area, close to the town centre and railway station. Cut off by roundabouts and free-fl ow traffic, the pedestrian environment is consequently hostile and the buildings and public realm are run-down.

Central to most regeneration projects is creating a network of linkages that are at a human scale and providing a framework for a distinctive local identity. At Basing View, we began with a movement framework that provided a direct connection between the business district and the railway station. The result is a new, active downtown area for the working community.
