This Compendium, written by us for the Homes and Communities Agency, is intended to assist local authorities, developers, planners, architects and others in the design and delivery of new, high quality developments. Based on a review of over 200 major development initiatives across the UK and mainland Europe, UDC2 distils lessons on how exemplar schemes have succeeded despite the many obstacles to delivering good urban design.

Within the Compendium, we defi ne five steps to achieving successful schemes, beginning with policy, then moving through delivery stages to the management of completed environments. For each of these five steps, the Compendium identifies potential issues and offers practical guidance on how obstacles can be overcome.

The publication has been distributed to 120 countries and translated into five languages to date. It is accompanied by a website of best practice case studies which we continue to research and update.
