SOUTHWARK CONSERVATION, LONDON
Conservation Area appraisals and strategies
The Borough of Southwark includes many of London’s most evocative historic townscapes - scenes from Dickens’ novels and essays relate to the Borough and Bermondsey, south of London Bridge. We were commissioned to prepare appraisals of ten important historic areas within Southwark to assist development control.
Following the designation of Conservation Areas in the 1970s and 80s, a concern has been to allow regeneration in the Conservation Areas while encouraging high standards of design where new development is necessary. We believe that good contemporary design can sit comfortably with historic neighbours. This is well demonstrated in Southwark, where some of the capital’s best modern architecture has been successfully introduced into 19th century warehouse areas on the riverside.
