NEWHALL URBAN EXTENSION, HARLOW, ESSEX

Exemplar new community

The Newhall landowners asked us to create a masterplan for a new neighbourhood. The planned population of 6,000 people is supported by schools, community and leisure facilities. Shops, services and employment are grouped around a market street district centre and a local centre.

Our approach was to maximise development potential both in terms of capacity and creating attractive and desirable locations. We aimed to create a true neighbourhood with a vibrant centre easily accessible by all residents. We focussed on the way in which land use and human activity are combined to create a legible public realm.

Newhall has won numerous awards from the RIBA, RTPI and civic societies and is extensively cited as an example of ‘best-practice’ in government publications.

This was our fi rst major urban extension project and, following support for the early conceptual masterplans, have been retained as urban design architects for the project.
