GAINSBOROUGH SOUTHERN NEIGHBOURHOOD, LINCOLNSHIRE

Energy efficient new neighbourhood

This commission involved creating a masterplan for a new neighbourhood as part of Gainsborough’s growth plan. The neighbourhood comprises 2,500 homes, a mixed-use district centre, 600 jobs, two primary school sites with associated local centres and green infrastructure.

Integral to the masterplanning process, we provided large-scale physical models as an aid to design and community participation.

The masterplan also set a clear vision for achieving high standards in energy effi ciencies. Space heating requirements are kept to a minimum through the use of passive solar design while a long-term energy strategy draws on biomass from the landowner’s wider estate to feed the co-generation plant (CHP).

The proposals received CABE support, who commented ‘We consider the masterplan to be amongst the best presented that we have seen… We applaud the use of more tailored building typologies across the development… and wish the scheme well.’
