WATERFORD AND ENVIRONS STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK PLAN, IRELAND

Strategic framework plan

We were jointly commissioned by three local authorities to lead the production of a Strategic Framework Plan for Waterford and its environs to support the development of Waterford’s economy for the next 25 years.

Waterford is set on the banks of the River Suir with a catchment area that extends to most of Waterford County and the south of Kilkenny County. The city is the focus for growth and development for south-east Ireland.

We prepared 20 year population forecasts for a range of scenarios. Using a geographic information system (GIS) we examined the essential elements making up the city-region relationship, including landscape character, historical development, density, land-use patterns and movement networks.

This analysis provided positive insights into how to develop Waterford as a compact city while reinforcing its role as a sub-regional centre, including the regeneration of the city’s major brownfi eld sites along the former quaysides.
