DEAL GROWTH STUDY, KENT

Placemaking-led planning

Deal is a remarkable medieval town on the Kent coast and at one time was the busiest port in England. Today it enjoys the reputation of being a quiet seaside resort. The town is looking for growth to support the economic development of the town centre, address the imbalance in demographics and improve the town’s social and physical infrastructure. However, growth is severely constrained by fl ood risks, limited road capacity and sensitive ecological assets.

studio | REAL formed part of a multi-disciplinary team led by GVA to prepare a framework and design concept to guide long-term growth. We studied landscape, topography and the historic development of the town to develop a thorough understanding of Deal’s urban form and neighbourhood structure. On this basis, we could advise the team on locations where new development could contribute to a socially, economically and physically stronger town.
