OXFORD CANAL BASIN, CENTRAL OXFORD

Canal basin regeneration

The Worcester Street car park occupies a strategic site at the eastern gateway into the city. Originally a canal basin serving barges on the Oxford to Coventry canal which brought coal to the university city, the basin was later filled in.

The study proposes the reopening of the canal basin which would also provide a site for a major civic building such as a concert hall together with mixed-use
commercial leisure and apartments. A spreadsheet analysis of costs and values established the viability of the project.
