A new housing typology
A comprehensive understanding of housing typologies is essential to our work as it helps us to explore new solutions for interesting and challenging projects. The affordable housing scheme by Moat at Newhall, which included mobility units, was one project which required such innovation.
We developed a courtyard typology with units focussed around a shared, managed garden. Each dwelling has a balcony or terrace looking onto this space. An active street frontage on the outside of the block provides an external outlook for all residents. Street trees are included in the surrounding street design to create a tranquil green setting.
The result is a group of affordable units, indistinguishable from neighbouring open market housing, which has been recognised for a number of awards. These include a Housing Design Award, Moat’s internal award for their best built scheme on completion and a CABE Building for Life Gold Standard.
