May | Moat Lane Conservation Awards

The first phase of the Moat Lane mixed-use regeneration project to be implemented has been the restoration of Bury Mount, a Norman castle mound at the centre of the scheme. Camlin Lonsdale won a design competition set up by the masterplanning team to undertake this key component of the project and have now won awards for it at the British Association of Landscape Industries annual event in December 2010 and again at the Museums and Heritage Awards in May 2011. This latest accolade is as outright winner in the Conservation / Restoration category for the Mount and the adjacent watermeadows, which were acquired as a major new public open space in Towcester town centre.

The masterplan for Moat Lane is based on the simple concept of extending the historic town centre street pattern into unused areas behind the main street. The quality of the public realm is therefore critical to the scheme, and Bury Mount provides a central element that embodies the town’s historic and cultural uniqueness. It is a focus for development that will complement Towcester’s market town role, with public buildings, shops and cafés, employment and housing.

Bury Mount is also featured in English Heritage’s best practice publication “Valuing Places: Good Practice in Conservation Areas”, March 2011 (as shown below).
