March | Bridging The Design Gap

In a bold move to bridge the gap between highway engineers and urban designers, Transform South Yorkshire and the South Yorkshire local authorities have commissioned a new residential design guide. studio | REAL, in association with Phil Jones Associates, have been asked to integrate the principles of highway and urban design in a single document that focuses on the street and neighbourhood environment as a whole – with a clear South Yorkshire emphasis.

The new guide will take advantage of the principles in the new Manual for Streets and promote the common goals of creating a high quality environment contained in the Building for Life criteria to blur the distinction between highway and urban design principles. The aim is to break down the barriers between the two design disciplines, commonly seen as adversaries, and help them to work more closely together.

The desire to work together follows an audit of the quality of recent developments and is driven by a shared commitment to provide the authorities with practical tools to significantly improve the quality of new housing development in South Yorkshire. It will also provide developers with clear and consistent advice to achieve this. The guidance will be incorporated into each of the local authorities planning policy frameworks.

The project forms part of Transform South Yorkshire’s nationally acclaimed Delivering Design Quality programme. The guidance will be completed by the end of 2009.
