February | A working tool for delivering quality and distinctiveness

Early spring saw the publication and adoption of the South Yorkshire Residential Design Guide by the four South Yorkshire authorities, Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. Commissioned by Transform South Yorkshire, the project was led by studio | REAL working with Phil Jones Associates and the local authority teams. The guide provides a practical, working tool for designers and local authority officers to find solutions for residential design that work in their locality and meet people's aspirations for a high quality environment. It combines urban design and highways guidance in one place, setting out general principles, technical requirements and a clear framework for assessing designs.

What sets the guide apart is its focus on integration: urban design and highway design, local character and wider standards, neighbourhood, community and street.

The guide achieves that integration by,

  • Promoting and facilitating a development team approach
  • Using Building for Life criteria as a common reference for design and assessment
  • Providing guidance on design appraisal as a foundation for proposals
  • Emphasising the importance of mobility for all
  • Taking a flexible approach to street design based on Manual for Streets
  • Giving a balanced focus on the neighbourhoods, streets and building

The project was the product of extensive collaborative working with the local authority teams which resulted in strong support for the guide across the different disciplines.
