April | Town Centre Improvement Plan for Barkingside
We are pleased to announce that studio | REAL has been chosen by the London Borough of Redbridge to prepare a town centre improvement plan for Barkingside, North East London.
Barkingside is a relatively successful suburban district centre, focused on a purpose built linear High Street, serving a wide catchment and with good connections to the London area. It is well known locally as the home of the Barnardo’s Village and the distinctive grade II listed Fullwell Cross Library by Frederick Gibberd. However, new investment and development is now needed if the High Street is to retain and strengthen its position as an attractive place to shop, work and visit.
Based upon their considerable experience in undertaking similar commissions, studio | REAL and the team will be developing a strategy to unlock the potential of Barkingside High Street, in line with the aspirations of both local authorities and the community. This will entail the drafting of a strategic vision to enhance the physical, social and economic health of the town, the identification of specific projects and development opportunities, and the preparation of planning briefs for individual sites together with an associated delivery plan. This exciting new commission presents a number of particular challenges including the appreciation of a broad range of local issues and aspirations, and the delivery of a regeneration strategy responding to the increasing reliance on suburbs such as these, to provide for future business and residential growth. A Council spokesman said “We are very excited to have appointed studio | REAL on this important project, and look forward to a productive relationship with them”. Other members of the team include DTZ, who will advise on property and economics, and MVA Consulting, who specialise in transport planning and highways engineering.
