Manifesto

At the event to launch of the Urban Design Group’s Directory, practices were invited to make a PechaKucha style presentation. studio | REAL used the time slot to present a ten-point Manifesto addressing what we think are the key issues that urban designers need to address:

  1. We need to build pieces of town, not just ‘housing’
  2. Urban form should shape local plans
  3. For most interventions we need strategic frameworks, not ‘master plans’
  4. We need to build-in capacity for adaptation
  5. One physical plan = 10 policy plans
  6. We have to get better at designing in 3D (as opposed to visualising completed designs)
  7. Plot-based urbanism
  8. Sustainability needs to be built-in not bolted on
  9. We must continue to preach the value of towns
  10. ‘Clients’ are those who will live there
