We are architects and urban planners who focus on urban design at a range of scales from spatial planning to master planning, town centres and the public realm. We have extensive experience of the design, planning and delivery of urban design initiatives.

ETHOS | Our projects are driven by a passion for urban quality and an understanding of delivery mechanisms. We have a clear ethos which ensures that each project we undertake has social value, is environmentally responsible, viable, and has design integrity.

SCOPE | We are committed to advancing urban quality through practice, research, education and continue to evolve innovative techniques for looking at urban form and development. We have a collaborative approach and regularly work with other professional teams on complex projects either in a supporting or lead role.

CLIENTS | We work extensively with local authorities to bring expertise in achieving urban quality to spatial plans and major new development. This is frequently alongside in-house teams who need urban design experience to address particular projects or to meet peak workloads.

Roger Evans

Welcome to our website!

We practice urban design and have an abiding interest in the theory, history and design of towns and city quarters.

Roger trained as an architect and town planner and holds a master’s degree in urban design. He taught at the Joint Centre for Urban Design at Oxford Brookes University while setting up the practice and was later an external examiner for urban design courses at Brookes and Cardiff Universities.

His design work includes strategic planning and urban design studies, master planning, regeneration strategies and the public realm of streets and places through which we experience our towns and cities. A number of these projects are described on this website.

As principal of Roger Evans Associates Ltd (REAL), he founded one of the first dedicated urban design practices in the UK. An early break for the practice was to undertake two of the government’s ‘Quality in Town and Country’ pilot studies for then Environment Secretary John Gummer. He was the lead author of ‘Urban Design Compendium 2’ for the Homes and Communities Agency, now translated into nine languages, and undertook research into traffic-calming design approaches for the Highways Agency and the Transport Research Laboratory. The practice has won numerous awards from the RIBA, RTPI and Civic Trust for design projects.

Projects include design studies for city centres including London and our home city of Oxford, regeneration strategies for market towns, new neighbourhoods including the multi award-winning Newhall, public realm improvement projects including London’s Square Mile, and best-practice research commissions for central and local government. Many of these projects and the design methods are including in current academic books and government publications on best practice.

He has written on urban design for the Architects Journal and Planning magazines and continue to publish articles on urban design thinking and speaking at conferences. He coined the strap line ‘City, town, neighbourhood, street’ to describe the different scales of urban design a decade before the Academy of Urbanism was founded but is pleased to see it still in use!

Roger is a past chair and trustee of the Urban Design Group, a national/international charity promoting best practice, and continues to support and campaign for urban quality as well as serving several design panels.

We believe that the practice of urban design is inseparable from sketching, drawing and thinking. We are available for work on challenging issues, complex sites and interesting places!
